What is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis Recti (DR), is an unnatural distance between the abdominal muscles, commonly referred to as abdominal separation.

Clinically DR is recognised as a distance of 2.7cm/3 fingers in width. It is due to the linea alba (the ligaments holding the abdominal muscles in place) being over stretched. The cause of DR is an increase in pressure in the abdominal cavity. There are many reasons for this increase in pressure, including the way we breathe, poor posture, the way we move and pregnancy. DR can effect men, women and children. It can have a massive impact on daily life, from back pain through to limiting certain activities, in fact 66% of people suffering from DR also suffer with pelvic floor dysfunction.

If you are unsure if you have DR, or would like further information, please get in touch.

How can we help your Diastasis Recti?

We do this using a full body approach on a 1:1 basis. In your initial consultation, your abdominal muscles will be checked to see if you actually have Diastasis Recti and, if so, to what degree. Your posture and alignment will be assessed looking for any imbalances, tightness in your muscles etc, we will also look at the way you stand, sit and move. You will be shown how to adapt daily moves like getting in and out of bed, yes, something that simple can make your DR worse!

A progressive program, tailored to you, will be drawn up, addressing the issues found in your assessment. Our specialised programme means that we will run consultations tailored for you, every three/four weeks, where you will be re-assessed and your programme will be adapted as you progress. Our aim is to help you regain a fully functioning core and body, to decrease the signs and symptoms associated with DR and to reduce your abdominal separation.
